Wallenstein Festival in Germany
This is in Altdorf. Altdorf was a Protestant university town up to the Thirty Years War. Its alumni played a major role in the early stages of the conflict when a number of the German princes sought to help the Bohemian rebels and then to oppose the Emperor. The Wallenstein connection is that he was a student there in 1599, one of nearly 500 Bohemian students at the time who were educated outside their homeland in radical Protestant
universities. Others included Basle, Jena, Heidelberg and Geneva, where they, in the words of the Emperor Ferdinand II, ‘in their youth, imbibed the spirit of rebellion and opposition to lawful authority’. A dozen of them served in the rebel government of Bohemia after the defenestration (Geoffrey Parker, Thirty Years War, p45).
Altdorf is accessible via Nuremburg from the United Kingdom as direct flights are available from some UK airports. It is on the S-Bahn transport network of that city. The journey takes around 40 minutes.
The Festival runs at the weekends between 27 th June and 26 th July 2009. It promises musicians and magicians entertaining the crowd on the market place, where groups of Altdorf inhabitants dressed as soldiers from the Thirty Years War will sell food and beverages. The main event is a "Lange Nacht" (‘Long Night’) taking place on Saturday 11 th July 2009.
There will be theatre performances of two plays on each weekend. These are the whole 150 minutes of Schiller’s Wallenstein trilogy and Franz Dittmar’s ‘Wallenstein in Altdorf’. The latter is about his student days and a duel over a young lady: before he was a Catholic convert and Imperialist general, the young Wallenstein was ‘educated as a Lutheran at the celebrated school of Altdorf until the authorities requested his removal, not without cause, since he had once taken part in a murderous brawl, and once nearly killed one of his servants’ (CV Wedgwood, Thirty Years War, p170). Both plays are in the Wichernhaushof, an open air, old Renaissance courtyard.
